Signs of PICC Line Infection
Went to Dr.'s surgery to have another set of bloods taken. Hopefully will be good enough to fly out to Germany on Wednesday to have next cycle of chemotherapy.
Then went to the Dunedin Hospital to have my PICC line cleaned. I told the nurse that I had ended up at Westcall Out of Hours Surgery on Saturday night as my temperature had been over 39°C's. They hadn't taken any action as, having taken paracetamol, my temperature had fallen by the time the doctor got round to seeing. They suggested that I see the nurses at the Dunedin if it happens again.
Blood cultures were taken from my PICC line as that was the obvious source of infection. I was told that it could be quite serious if I had got a PICC line infection. If not treated in time it could end up killing me!!! My temperature had been all over the place over the last week and I had just put it down to the chemotherapy. I felt a bit silly that I hadn't gone to the hospital sooner.
As I was due to go to Germany on Wednesday I decided to go and get some antibiotics from my GP so that I could start taking them immediately as it was very likely to be a PICC line infection which would need antibiotics. I wouldn't get the test results until Wednesday.
Felt really ill all evening and had a very high fever throughout the night. Didn't know whether to go to Germany in the morning. I didn't feel well enough to be flying.
