Ridgeway Challenge - 29th August 2009
This is Roger Davis’s 3rd fundraising event/challenge for us. He did the Ridgeway Challenge on the 29th August and managed to raise £640 for our campaign. The Ridgeway Challenge is an 85 mile run along a 5000 year old trackway through the Chiltern Hills and North Wessex Downs. Roger completed the challenge within 24 hours as he had hoped. I don’t know if Roger is just barking mad or going through a mid life crisis, but whatever it is I am very grateful. Thanks Roger.
I would also like to thank Roger’s wife Shiv and their children Emily and Willow along with my husband Simon, and friends Joe Dawson and Simon Jones for going out and supporting him along the way
Bristol to Reading Bike Ride - 11th/12th July 2009
The original challenge was to take place on the weekend of 11th/12th July 2009 and was to walk up 24 peaks in the Lake District, each one over 2,400 feet, in 24 hours total walking time. The distance covered would have been approximately 31 miles.
Unfortunately, due to concerns over fitness the challenge had to be cancelled. The Lake District 24 Peaks Challenge is very difficult and dangerous. We would have put the safety of the walkers at risk if we had gone ahead with it without all participants being at a good level of fitness.
In its place the participants organised another challenge involving a 102 mile bike ride from Bristol to Reading along the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath. This challenge took place over 2 days starting from Bristol on Saturday 11th July. Camp was set up half way on the Saturday evening and then the cyclists arrived in Reading on Sunday late afternoon.
I would like to thank the following:
Roger Davis, Parveen Rashid, Bruce Mackinnon and my husband Simon for doing the taking part in the challenge. Roger actually ran the 50 miles on the Sunday instead of cycling.
The Davis, Whitehead, and Mackinnon families for camping in the rain on Saturday night. The conditions were not the best for camping, but everyone had a great time and I didn’t hear anyone complain about the awful weather.
Gail Critchlow, Bee Tucker and their families for joining us at the camp site on Saturday evening to offer their support to the challengers.
Everyone that sponsored Roger, Parveen, Bruce and Simon. We managed to raise an amazing £1,500.
Reading Half Marathon - 29th March 2009
Two of my friends are going to be running the Reading Half Marathon this year to raise funds for our campaign. Both Xenia Harrison and Gisela Blackburn are mums of children at Caversham Primary School. Their daughters, Ella and Lily are in the same class as Mya.
I am really grateful that Xenia and Gisela are doing this for me and thank all those who have sponsored them. If you would like to sponsor either Xenia or Gisela please click on Just Giving.
Good luck to you both. Mya and I will be there cheering you on.
Caversham Charity Ball - 20th March 2009
I would like to thank our friends Roger and Shiv Davis who organised the Caversham Charity Ball. Their daughter, Willow, is in Mya's class at school.
The event was held at the Riversbank Club in Caversham. Tickets were £10 per person.
It was an absolutely fantastic night. Great to see so many of the guests wearing the themed black and gold.
The evening raised over £1,700. This will be split equally between the "Make My Mummy Better" campaign and "Thrive".
There was a raffle with the prizes being donated by the following:

It looked like everyone enjoyed themselves. I still can't believe that there was a Pole in the middle of the dance floor!! Actually, I find it harder to believe that there were so many of the guests that knew how to pole dance!!!
Thank you to everyone that came and supported us and also to those that couldn't come but made a donation towards the evening.
It was such a success that Roger is talking about making it a yearly event. Sounds like a great idea.
Fashion Show - Friday 7th November 2008
A friend of ours, Tracey Davis, offered to organise the Fashion Show to help raise funds for our campaign. Mrs Tomkins, Headmistress at Caversham Primary, kindly offered the school hall as the venue.
Tickets for the evening were £12.50 for adults, which included a complimentary glass of fizz on arrival. Children had free entry. It featured stunning mums and cool kids showing off the latest designs from Anna's Wardrobe of Henley and the children's clothing label Captain Tortue.
There were a lot of people who gave up their time to help and support the fashion show and I am grateful to everyone involved. I would also like to thank the following for donating raffle prizes:
Anna's Wardrobe of Henley
Electric Hairdressing
Zappa’s Hairdressing
Virgin Vie
Essensuals Toni & Guy
Mary & Paul Aspell, Republique Serviced Apartments
Heather Hexter

There was also one special "Silent Auction" lot that was donated to us by Philip Baker Estate Agents. They have donated a "commission-free house sale". The lucky winner will enjoy the full service at no cost and it can be used at any time. This applies to all types of residential property regardless of the price. You could save yourself thousands of pounds. Unfortunately, this item did not reach it's reserve price, so was unsold on the night. Therefore, it is still available if anyone is interested in it.
The evening was a huge success. We managed to rasie £1,100. Everyone commented on how enjoyable the evening had been.
Great South Run - Saturday 26th October 2008
Nicky Rumsey ran the Great South Run which is a 10 mile run in Portsmouth. Nicky has a daughter, Maisie, in Mya's class at Caversham Primary. She has been fantastic in supporting me and I would like to thank all those who supported Nicky and sponsored her. She raised £1030. Which is absolutely fantastic. You can still sponsor Nicky by clicking on this link: www.justgiving.com
Nicky completed the course in 1hour 38 minutes. She said that she had a "bad running day". To me, 1 hour 38 minutes sounds like a great time.
My family and I would like to thank Nicky and her family. I know that her family were at the course supporting her and getting very wet and cold.
Tesco Packing and Collection Day - 25th October 2008
I would like to thank Jeanette Poole again for the packing and collection day at Tesco. The day raised an amazing £445.80.
Jeanette tells me that the Store Manager was so impressed with the children that he has offered for us to do another day.
I wouldlike to thank the following:

The following for supplying children to offer packing and collecting donations in Tesco
Chiltern Edge School
Caversham Heights and West Reading Girls Brigades

Highdown School
I would also like to thank the Reading Youth Offending Team. Barrie Ramsey brought along two of their boys who had volunteered to help us. They both worked really hard alongside the rest of the the youg volunteers packing bags and collecting money at the end of the checkouts. A definite asset to our fundraising. Hopdfully we will get more volunteers from them for future events.
All in all, a very successful day.
Black Tie Charity Ball - 18th October 2008
The Black Tie Charity Ball was a great evening. Thank you to Jeevan for organising it. I know that she put in a lot of effort over the past year to make the evening a success.
The venue, East Winter Garden, Canary Wharf, was absolutely fantastic. It looked stunning on the night.
The evening commenced with a Champagne reception, followed by a lavish 4 course meal and various forms of entertainment throughout the night, including a 'money can't buy' charity auction. Everything about the evening was top class. The tickets were £80 each, but were worth every penny. Everyone that I met commented on what a great evening it had been. I know I enjoyed myself.
I would like to thank everyone that helped with the event and all those that donated items for the raffle and auction.
Tandem Sky Dive - Sunday 5th October 2008
My cousin Pally finally got to do her tandem skydive on Sunday 5th October 2008, after it was cancelled previously due to adverse weather conditions. Her friends Julie Finch, Jacqui Murphy-Smith and Lauren Murphy-Smith were also supposed to be jumping with her, but were unable to get a slot until March 2009.
The skydive took place at Lewknor airport, just off the M40. Mya and I went along to watch Pally. It was a beautiful clear day. Perfect weather for jumping out of an aeroplane.
After the jump, Pally said it was the most amazing feeling, adrenaline pumping through her body. I will take her word for it, as you won't get me up there!!!
I would like to thank Pally and everyone that sponsored her. She managed to raise an incredible £1,671. I would also like to wish Julie, Jackie and Lauren good luck for when they do their jump.
