8.50 appointment with my Oncologist this morning. I requested the appointment for two reasons. The first being that I have been feeling really unwell with serious diarrhoea and vomiting. I’ve completely lost my appetite and can’t manage to keep even a sip of water down. I am also really suffering with something called Myopathy in my hands and feet. This is where there has been nerve damage to my hands and feet. I can’t even hold a spoon at the moment as my hands are so sore and I am also having difficulty walking on my sore feet. The diarrhoea, vomiting and Myopathy are all common side effects of the chemo (Capecitabine). Therefore, I needed to discuss reducing the dose as I don’t think my body could cope with what it has had to with last week.
The second reason for requesting the appointment was to discuss surgery because, on a more positive note, the combination of drugs that I am on is working really well. I have had two cycles of the new treatment and the cancer has shrunk considerably. I wanted to get my oncologist’s opinion on it.
The appointment didn’t start off too well as when my oncologist came to call me in I had to rush to the toilet to vomit. The vomiting continued for quite a while. When it did calm down he could see that I was really quite unwell and needed urgent attention and possibly be admitted into hospital. Before he sent me to Oncology he examined me and was pleasantly surprised by how well the chemo was working. He said he would start discussions with the surgeon I saw in London. If the cancer continued reducing at the rate it was it wouldn’t be long before I could have surgery. I was really pleased to hear that.
I ended up spending the whole day in Oncology. Various tests were carried out and 5.5 litres of Saline was administered via my port. One of the tests showed that I was severely dehydrated. As I was feeling a lot better by the end of the afternoon there was no need to admit me overnight. It was decided, however, that I was far too weak to have treatment tomorrow. The treatment was suspended for at least a week. I was disappointed, but knew that this was the right thing to do. There was no way that I could endure more chemo feeling the way I did.
I have had my CT results since my last blog entry. They came back clear. This was fantastic news, but we still don’t know what is causing the pain in my abdomen area.
I have also decided not to pursue the embolisation procedure that was suggested by the Leonardis Klinik as the combination of drugs that I am on seems to be working well enough to get me to the surgery stage. I have let the clinic know about my progress as they are keen that I have surgery as soon as possible. The double mastectomy is key to me being able to continue with the options offered to me by the Leonardis Klinik.
