Thursday 5th March 2009

Went to see my UK Oncologist again today.  I was really nervous about it because over the last couple of weeks the skin above the right breast area had been getting more and more irritated.  This little patch has come and gone many times over the last few years.  It’s never been biopsied so we don’t know if it is cancerous.  My Oncologist told me that the problem with doing a biopsy now is that there could be some healing issues with it being so soon after surgery.  Looking at the pathology and scan results, in his opinion, he thinks it is unlikely to be cancer but he suggested we keep an eye on it.   It could be lymphodema causing it, in which case it’s not too much of a problem.  I was really pleased to hear that.

He was really positive about me again and thinks that I am doing amazingly well.  I really feel my relationship with him has gone up a level since the operation (not that we haven’t had a good relationship in the past).  The conversation today had a much lighter air about it.  Over the last 6 years I have shed a lot of tears in his office.  Even though we were talking about serious treatment options today it didn’t feel as bad.  It felt like we were taking very positive steps towards a positive future.

After examining me, there looks as if there is a little area on my left hand side that has not healed very well.  So he suggested that I see Mr Gui to get his opinion on it, and while I'm there  get his opinion on the irritated area above the right breast.   I can’t start my radiotherapy until the wound areas are completely healed.  So it is important that if there is a healing problem that it is sorted out as quickly as possible.

Before I left his office we penciled in a pre-radiotherapy appointment for the 25th March 2009.  Hopefully I will be ready for it then.  If everything goes to plan I should be able start radiotherapy 7-10 days after the initial appointment.  I was surprised to find out that the radiotherapy regime has changed since I had it last.  I had radiotherapy 5 days a week for 6 weeks.  Now apparently research shows that you don’t need as much as they gave in the past.  So he plans to give me 3 days a week for 4 weeks.

All in all, feeling very good psychologically.
