First Visit to Leonardis Klinik

Arrived in Germany with my brother (Harminder) yesterday.  PET scan at 8.30am in Plochingen (near Stuttgart).  Very nervous as I had never had a PET scan before and had been told that it would show up even the tiniest cancer activity.  I was very scared about what it might uncover.  I had also been having pains in the left side of my neck and throat over the last few months which had got worse.

Before we went into the clinic where the PET scan was going to take place, Harminder and I agreed that it would be better to have the results of the PET scan during my appointment with Dr Kopic the following day.  We felt there was no advantage in receiving the results today and that it would make more sense for Dr Kopic to give me the results, and then discuss my treatment plan.

Dr. Hoerr was lovely.  He made me feel very at ease.  The PET scan involved having an injection of glucose and dye, resting for an hour and then having the scan.  It took an hour and 15 minutes but felt like an eternity lying in the Scanner.  I was very relieved when it was over.

Dr Hoerr decided to do an ultrasound before we left.  I knew things weren’t quite right when he placed the ultrasound on my neck.  I've known for quite a while that there are cancerous nodes in my neck, but as it had been getting stiffer and more sore over the last few months I was worried that it was getting worse.

As we left, Dr Hoerr wished me luck and told me that Dr Kopic is an excellent oncologist and would definitely be able to help me.  On that note we started our 3 hour car journey to the Leonardis Klinik , Bad Heilbrunn.  Spoke to Simon on the way and told him that we had decided not to get the results until tomorrow.  Poor thing, he told me that he hadn’t managed to sleep much last night worrying about the results and now he had another night of worry too.  He did understand why I had waited, even though he said that he woudn’t have.

That evening in the restaurant, at the Leonardis Klinik we got chatting to an American couple.  They told us how they had tried every treatment that was available in the US and nothing had worked.  But since they had been coming to the Leonardis Klinik, Holly had improved considerably.  Holly has breast cancer which has spread to her bones.  She was starting the Dendritic Cell Vaccine which involved staying at the clinic for three weeks.  They were really positive about the clinic.  I felt much better after speaking to them and felt I had done the right thing in coming to Germany.

Found it difficult to get to sleep in the unfamiliar surroundings.  Slept with the tv on.  Don’t know why, but it made me feel a little less scared.
