Had my double mastectomy on Saturday 24th January. Arrived at the London Clinic at 6.30am. I went down to theatre at 11.00am and was back in my room by 7.00pm. I was very disorientated but was awake enough to hear Mr. Gui say that he was very pleased with how the operation went and it was a total success.
I stayed at the London Clinic until Saturday 31st January. I have to say that it was the most pleasant hospital stay that I have ever had. Everyone, from the porter who showed us up to my room, to the nurses, to the doctors, etc. were all absolutely fantastic. I had thought that I would have been desperate to get back home. But in fact I was glad to be resting at the hospital, surrounded by people who were looking after me. I realized then exactly how tired the treatment over the last few years had made me feel. I really needed complete rest. And that is what I got.
I did miss Mya very much. It was the longest period of time I had ever been away from her. We spoke over the phone numerous times a day, but by Saturday I was keen to get home and see my daughter. So I was very pleased when Mr Gui felt that I was well enough to go home.
Before I was discharged Mr Gui gave me my pathology results which he said were very favourable. He had managed to get clear margin on both sides and told me that the lymph glands that they had removed from under my left arm had come back negative. All the results were fantastic and the best outcome that I could have hoped for. I was told however, that there is a big risk that the cancer could come back so I was advised to continue with treatment (radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy) to make sure that everything was done to reduce the risks of it returning. I was in total agreement with him and will be discussing the next steps with my Oncologist as soon as I can get an appointment with him.
My whole experience of the London Clinic was an extremely positive experience. I feel very lucky to have had Mr Gui and his team carry out my surgery and look after me. Everyone seemed to have a positive attitude and really want to help. There was one nurse in particular that helped me enormously. Her positivity, kind words and eagerness to help me has given me considerable strength. Having the surgery was definitely the right thing to do, even though I had been told previously that it was not possible. I am glad that I was persistent and didn’t give up.
